RIYADH: Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has stressed the need for supporting domestic tourism instead of traveling abroad.
The mufti was answering a question from a listener during his radio program when he said that, from a religious point of view, an excess of freedom in some of these countries could impair moral values.
However, he noted that those who are already abroad should work to maintain their Islamic spirit by performing prayers and adhering to other religious obligations. When asked whether it is right to travel abroad as a tourist with one's wife and children, he said: “It is better not to go to other countries because of the excessive freedom and disregard of their people for social and moral obligations.”
Al-Sheikh added: “These countries have completely open social media and communication systems where everything is available online.”
The mufti advised those who are inclined to travel abroad for whatever reason to fear God, offer five daily prayers and stay away from what God has forbidden, such places of vice. He also requested that traveling families ensure that their wives and daughters wear veils and stay away from mixed gatherings.
He also noted that some Western countries have already banned the use of veils and scarfs by Muslim women as they conflict with their own customs and traditions.
