JAZAN: A boy died and at least 29 families evacuated from their homes in the face of heavy rains and flooding in Wadi Damd in Jazan.
The Civil Defense officials have taken those evacuated to safe shelters.
About 13 families of those displaced people hail from Madaya, another 13 from Atoud and three from Jazan.
Defense teams in Damd were told that a 14-year-old youth drowned in floods in Wadi Damd. He was taken to hospital in critical condition. He confirmed that a total of 29 families were evacuated, according to Capt. Yahya Alqahtani, spokesman, Jazan Civil Defense.
The heavy rains, accompanied by thunder, showed the unfit state of projects for water drainage that turned into large pools flooding neighborhoods. This was the case in Abu Areesh where its streets and residential areas were turned into large pools for children to swim in, causing frustration among people who demanded the immediate removal of these waters and the execution of drainage projects.
The Abu Areesh local council made a 12-hour tour of the area to see firsthand the extent of the damage. The council’s chairman, Fahd Kharmi, confirmed the tour, and said standing water did indeed affect traffic movement and there were damages. Jazan region Designate-Governor Ibrahim Al-Khayyat called on all departments to take action and preventive measures to face the rains witnessed in the region.
He called for collective action and procedures, maintenance work, clean up, drainage and removal of water, filling of swamps, mosquito and pest control, and public health controls. He stressed the rainwater drainage projects in the city of Jazan and the provinces are working well, as well as the old pumps have been supplemented with new ones, and maintenance teams are working on the follow-up and maintenance firsthand.
The rainfall on Darb and the surrounding villages continued for the third day, and the rains resulted in the isolation of a number of villages, cutting off main and side roads with vehicles coming to a standstill, and water reaching inside people’s houses in Atood.
Darb Gov. Ghazi Alshamari reported that the rains are being followed up in Darb with the concerned authorities, who are on full alert for any rescues that may be needed.
Designated head of Darb Municipality Ismael Muadi said after such cases, the municipality calls on emergency teams to be on full alert and to begin its operational work to remove the water from roads, and opening up the main roads, according to Alwatan.
