The Ministry of Justice shattered the dreams and ambitions of Saudi females seeking to be appointed as public notaries at the courts.
Mansour Al-Qafari, the official spokesman for the Justice Ministry, was quoted as saying to a local publication that the ministry is concentrating its efforts to employ qualified females in legal issues in the women’s departments, especially in cases of personal statuses, social services to deal with family issues and child custody, as well as the rights of visitation.
A number of female applicants, who applied for administrative jobs in the women’s departments of the public notary divisions, demanded granting them the title of “public notary,” equal to their male colleagues, especially after allowing women advocates to work under official permits.
Suhaila Zain Al-Abdeen, member of the National Society for Human Rights, said there is no legal obstacle in Shariah that hampers the appointment of women to this job title.
“Once the Ministry of Justice set the employment condition concerning the qualifications, any woman who has such qualifications and applied for the job has the right to be appointed as a public notary, equal to men,” she explained.
Meanwhile a recent statistical report revealed that the number of public notaries across the Kingdom stands at 952. The number of proxies implemented by public notaries in 1436 stood at 1,598,638, guarantee instruments 2,292, mortgages 49,447, redemption of mortgages 6,296, separation of proxies 38,253, canceling of proxies 20,117 and replacing missing or destroyed deeds stood at 2,668 documents.
