CAIRO: In what could be a major development, the Arab League will be discussing its new charter and ideological framework in the forthcoming meeting of its council of foreign ministers.
The tenth meeting of the working team entrusted with the task of reviewing the Arab League charter and developing the ideological framework of the joint Arab mechanism, was held on Sunday. It was chaired by the Kingdom. Among the amendments which were proposed and discussed at the meeting was a mechanism of voting on decisions of the Arab League.
At the end of the meeting, Ahmad bin Abdul Aziz Qattan told reporters: “We are implementing the decisions of the ministerial council of the Arab League regarding proposed amendments in the charter of the Arab League, and development of its ideological framework.”
He said the meeting focused on the amendments regarding charter of the Arab League, adding that the meeting was “fruitful.”
Qattan expressed his confidence that the work on the new charter of the Arab League would be necessary to meet the demands of developments around the world.
Responding to a question if the amendment would include mechanisms for voting on decisions of the Arab League, Qattan said the working team “is going to discuss it.”
He said that both mechanisms of voting were proposed and it was agreed that this would be discussed in the coming meetings. “It is important to change the voting mechanism so we can solve problems fast in no time.”
He said that the issues related to amendments in the charter and ideological framework of the Arab League would be completed soon. It would be presented in its final form at the coming summit of the Arab League which would be chaired by Yemen.
Ambassador Hussam Zakir, assistant secretary general and head of the office of the secretary general of the Arab League, said: “The tenth meeting of the business team, which had the task of reviewing the charter and development of the ideological framework of the joint Arab work mechanism, was held and we came closer to finish the work on the subject.”
He said: “The representatives of the member countries who participated in the meeting have finished a lot of work on the subject. Soon we will be able to talk about presenting these amendments to the foreign ministers’ council of the Arab League in preparation for forwarding it to the coming summit.”
About the mechanism of voting in the Arab League, Zaki said that there were different views on the subject which were discussed in the meeting, along with other issues, issues that need time. He said that the main objective is that there should be larger agreement on the amendments and development of an ideological framework between member countries.
