RIYADH: The volume of relief, medical, educational and housing assistance programs provided by Saudi non-government relief committees and campaigns to a host of countries amounts to SR3.84 billion since its inception.
The countries included Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the countries of East Asia, according to a statement issued by the Saudi National Campaign to support brothers in Syria.
Since the beginning, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has given great importance to relief and humanitarian works on the basis of its constitution derived from Islam, the religion of peace and tolerance, the report said.
The Kingdom has opened official channels, at local, regional and global levels, specialized in humanitarian work and contributed to alleviate sufferings of millions of people affected by wars and natural disasters worldwide, the report said.
The Kingdom, further, enabled bodies concerned with charity and relief works to undertake their humanitarian and civilized missions which covered more than 70 percent of the world’s countries based on statistics of the organizations specialized in humanitarian assistance.
Through the Saudi National Campaign to support Syrians, the Kingdom has fulfilled all commitments toward the Syrians at the popular and official levels.
On Feb. 4, 2015, the Kingdom supported the humanitarian cause in Syria with $100 million as part of the 4th International Donors Conference in London.
The Kingdom also provided humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people through the Saudi National Campaign to support Syrians, which is considered the first relief campaign since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis. It carried out its programs in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, inside Syria and a number of neighboring countries.
As regards sheltering programs, the Kingdom prepared and constructed 5,564 housing units at the Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan; developed the camp of King Abdullah Gardens in Al-Ramtha City; installed 7,250 shelters; paid house rents of Syrian families who moved from Jordan to Lebanon from 2013 to 2016; provided thousands of mats; five water purification stations; drinking water inside Syria and their assembling locations on the Turkish borders at the cost of SR134.28 million, the report said.
As far as relief programs are concerned, the Saudi committees and campaigns provided relief items to the Syrians through 16 land transport means comprising 722 trucks carrying more than 14,000 tons of food and relief items supported by 10 planes carrying 1,000 tons for Syrian refugees in Turkey, the report said.
