Newly launched roads across the Riyadh Air Base (RAB) contain integrated and state-of-the-art traffic systems through tunnels. The roads have been code-named “smart roads.”

The road projects, which are designed to join extensions of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq and Oruba Street, are run by a centralized control room, which aims to ensure the highest safety standards for drivers.

The new smart roads and the associated traffic control room (TCR) are part of a similar project undertaken by the Higher Commission of Development in Riyadh (HCDR) on King Abdullah Road, located at the capital’s busiest commercial area.

Experts say smart roads can accommodate electronic traffic applications that allow road users automatic guidance during traffic congestion in the event of accidents and other adverse road conditions through a variety of electronic boards.

The new project is equipped with 22 variable guiding panels, 161 directory boards and 120 track controlling panels inside the three tunnels. The project is also equipped with 260 and 34 fixed and axial cameras respectively.

The project incorporates advanced security and safety systems, including call centers for emergencies, alarm bells, exit gates, radio message exchange services on FM, fire fighting, lighting and ventilation systems, in addition to flood disposal pumps, humidity and rain meters.
