JEDDAH: Defending champion Jeddah United Hitters-UGAFCO delivered a 7-0 sweep of the men’s championship with a victory against IMC (International Medical Center ) in the best-of-five final in the Kalayaan Volleyball Cup 3rd Conference at Trio Ranch & Country Club on the outskirts of Jeddah.
Jeddah United Hitters went four sets to get past IMC 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 and retain the title before a throng of volleyball fans on Friday.
KAMC (King Abdulaziz Medical City) entered the court looking to keep the women’s title for the second straight time. Instead, KAMC took a 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18 beating from IMC which missed a championship double and had to settle for one-for-two in the tournament final after its men’s team lost against the defending champions.
The KAMC Lady Spikers were out of sorts for the big game, giving some semblance of a fight only in the first set against the eventual new champions who dominated in the last three sets.
Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital Fusion lost its own bid for a third-place double, denied by Jeddah Blue Spikers in the men’s division and Volleyball Stars in the women’s division. The respective scorelines were 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 and 25-15, 22-15, 15-9.
The awards ceremony took place after the matches in which Vice Consul Lemuel Lopez of the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah was the chief guest and came in behalf of Consul General Imelda Panolong. The other VIPs present were sponsor representatives Mohammed Sami Khan, marketing analyst of Pepsi Cola; Alex Sales, OSN Pinoy Executive; and Allan Castillo, International Sales Marketing, SMDC.
The organizers congratulated team members including coaches and players for helping make the Kalayaan Cup third season a big success. They also thanked sponsors for their support of the tournament that is increasingly growing each season.
