ALIGARH, 29 April 2007 — Three top officials of the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University resigned yesterday. Registrar professor Faizan Mustafa, Proctor professor Akhlaq Ahmed and Controller of Exam Mehandi Hassan Rizvi submitted their resignation to Acting Vice Chancellor M. Salahuddin, which was immediately accepted.

A committee headed by the acting vice chancellor held an emergency meeting to discuss the spate of resignations. After discussions, professor Javed Mussarat was appointed as the new registrar and professor Syed Ahsan as the new proctor of the university, while the appointment of new controller of exam was kept pending.

Pressure was building up on these officials due to continued agitation and protests in the campus on one pretext or the other. The law and order situation had also deteriorated considerably resulting in the death of an engineering student two days ago. The students were constantly demanding the resignations of the three key officials.

However, the situation is still tense but under control. The security forces deployed in the campus and nearby sensitive areas will continue to be deployed till normalcy returns, said a police official.
