MAKKAH: Police yesterday arrested a man suspected of carrying out several armed highway robberies in Makkah over the past six weeks, said Maj. Abdul Muhsen Al-Mayman, spokesman for Makkah police.
“The gunman used to threaten motorists with a revolver on deserted roads. He’d take all their money and valuables. We think he has been behind 14 robberies,” Al-Mayman said.
The first report of such a robbery was received on Sept. 14, prompting police to set up a special team of investigators to track down the criminal.
“We got reports that he had attacked seven people on Friday. We succeeded in discovering three stolen cars with fake number plates used by the man on the same day. The details of the cars used by the suspect finally led to his arrest outside his home on Saturday,” said Al-Mayman.
He added that the man had convictions on stealing and drug trafficking.
