The Riyadh Education Department has now applied a semester system to 248 secondary schools (both boys and girls) in Riyadh with the exception of the syllabus-based schools, according to the supervisor at the planning unit of Riyadh Education, Faiza Saif Al-Sharif.
Earlier, a group of female educational supervisors held a meeting to explore the semester system under the motto “evaluation for learning.”
Addressing the meeting, Al-Sharif announced that the semester system would have three branches: scientific, literal and administrative. The period of study would last for three years, each year of which is composed of two semesters. Each semester runs for 18 weeks, she said.
She said the semesters work independently from subjects, exams and results but are still linked with the class levels in terms of sequence of subjects, academic plans and cumulative rates which will be 25 percent for the first academic year, and 35 percent and 40 percent for the second and third academic years, respectively.
The semester system has also introduced a new subject for students, entitled “applied skills," she said.
