A well-known Indian educationist, Saiyid Hamid, died here in Majidia hospital on Monday. He was 94.
Regarded as a Muslim reformer, Saiyid Hamid was one of the members of the high-level committee headed by Justice Rajendra Sachar, appointed by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005.
After retiring from a long and distinguished career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), he was appointed vice chancellor of his alma mater Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
He later became the chancellor of Hamdard University in Delhi. He was also appointed secretary of Hamdard Education Society to look after Hamdard Public School and Hamdard Study Circle.
He won several national level awards, including Sanskriti Award for literature, Urdu Academy award, Hindi Academy award and National fellowship award by Ministry of Culture, government of India.
He has many books to his credit that include two novels, three full length plays and many short stories.
