Meteorology experts from across the Gulf gathered in the Kingdom on Monday to discuss regional climate forecasts and ways to build the capacity of researchers in the region.
The Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research (CECCR), which has a mandate to conduct research on various aspects of climate change, is hosting the first such workshop. It kicked off at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah.
“The workshop includes a distinguished group of local and international scientists in the field of seasonal predictions,” said Mansour Almazroui, director of the CECCR.
“This workshop is being held according to the vision of the center to achieve excellence in the field of weather and climate research at regional and global levels.”
“Our main focus is to build the capacity of the participants and researchers from regional and national Arab meteorological services in the field of seasonal climate predictions,” he said.
Almazroui hoped that the workshop would improve the understanding of the participants about the region’s climate, which is important for predictions. The experts would conduct training sessions on the use of the available climate data to assess global and regional seasonal predictions, he said.
Most importantly, local CECCR researchers and staff members have organized the training workshop which will include most regional Arab meteorological services, he said.
