Saudi students from both sexes received 165 international prizes from their participation in cultural, sports and scientific competitions on regional and international levels in 2013 and 2014. Sources from the Education Ministry say students achieved 165 gold, silver and bronze medals during the contests.
One of the most remarkable prices obtained by the students was during the World Campaign for Research on World Climate, where Saudi pupils got first, second (regional) and third place (scientific) for this year’s competition in Bahrain. They also obtained four silver in the “Mathematics” Olympics in Qatar.
At a regional sports competition during 2014, Saudi students excelled in gymnastics and swimming games, receiving four gold medals, eight silver and 14 bronze medals.
The fact that Saudi students are winning in sports, sciences, culture and in many other categories means that there is a greater awareness among the population on the importance of creativity and promoting competition, as well as striving to win.
Both the Ministry of Education and King Abdulaziz Foundation for Talent and Creativity have impacted positively in this new trend, as part of the government’s policies to achieve a “knowledge economy,” rather than one based only on natural resources.
As a reflection of these new guidelines, the 2015 National Olympics for Science will have 116,277 Saudi male and female participants, a 16 percent increase from the previous year. Once students apply through their school, a panel of academic experts will judge their projects and achievements and decide which names go forward to the final international competitions.
The general competitiveness environment in the Kingdom as of now, is bringing home medals from international contests like the one held in Copenhagen in 2013, where Saudi students brought back four bronze medals in the Physics’ category.
