The Twitter Saudi Forum’s 3rd edition, held in Riyadh, gathered hundreds of people to discuss the use of social media in the Kingdom. Among one of the topics covered during the event, is the fact that over 41 percent of Saudis have Twitter accounts on the social network site, an expert told a Saudi twitter forum in Riyadh.
Dr. Abdullah Al-Musnad, a Saudi Twitter expert, told the audience gathered at the forum that eight million Saudis send one million tweets every 24 hours and, accordingly, the Kingdom is surpassing many countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia despite the tremendous difference in population.
During the event, participants called for more activate social network sites for the public interests, as well as more privacy protection policies, support of charity work, and provision of correct information to kill rumors or any news hurting the nation, personalities or institutions.
On the other hand, Twitter users shared their experiences and highlighted the big responsibility placed at the hands of internet and social networking sites, as well as the risks of malicious tweets directed against individuals and institutions.
The event was joined by more than 600 Twitter users of all ages and experts, developers and those concerned with the technical aspects of the social networking site.
Amany Al-Shaalan, Murtaza Yusuf and Abdul Majeed Al-Otaibi were among the prominent figures who presented their experiences as founders of different Twitter accounts. Al-Shaalan gave a speech on charity work through Twitter, while Yusuf was concerned with employment.
Al-Otaibi preferred to focus in spreading correct health practices in the community.
For his part, Yasser Alasefeer, an expert in Internet security, said that technology has its benefits, but it also spreads many rumors which, he said, should be controlled and eliminated through application of certain programs his company is working on.
