RIYADH: The body of a 23-year-old Saudi scholarship student was found at a university in the city of Kansas in the US on Saturday morning.
Wichita State University (WSU) police are investigating the student’s death in the parking lot of Fairmount Towers on the WSU campus.
According to Abdul Rahman Al-Otaibi, vice president of the Saudi Student Association at Wichita State, the victim, Rayan Ibrahim, was a 23-year-old Saudi electrical engineering undergraduate student who had come to the United States from Makkah. Earlier, Ibrahim was studying in an Oregon university.
“I think he came from prayer or mosque or something because we have a prayer in the morning at 4:30 a.m.,” said Alotaibi.
The victim was taken to the hospital where he died. Throughout the day word of the tragedy spread across the international student community. Al-Otaibi says the group is like a family.
“We are 500 students here, all of whom I know are shocked or heartbroken with sadness,” he said.
Al-Otaibi says the victim had only been at Wichita State for about six months.
“I don’t think he was a trouble-maker,” said Al-Otaibi. “He was a good man, that’s what I think about him.”
He was not a member of the Saudi Student Association, but Al-Otaibi said he “was around campus” frequently.
Wichita police Sgt. Paul Kimble said police received a call shortly before 6:30 a.m. Saturday from “somebody leaving for work” to check on a man lying in the parking lot of the dormitory.
