JEDDAH: A Saudi delegation will visit Baghdad in the coming days to follow up on the implementation of the agreement to release prisoners, confirmed Iraqi President Fuad Masum.
During a meeting with a number of writers, academics and journalists in Baghdad on Wednesday, he praised Saudi Arabia in helping his country combat terrorism, noting that the current phase requires extensive efforts from all neighboring countries in order to defeat terrorism.
“During my visit to the Kingdom and meeting with the Saudi leadership, they expressed their readiness to provide support to Iraq in all areas in order to combat terrorism,” he was quoted as saying by Al-Watan newspaper. “They consider the Iraqi people as their brothers,” he added.
In the coming days, he said a Saudi delegation will arrive in Baghdad to complete all investigations related to improving relations between the two countries and other economic and security issues.
With regards to implementation of the agreement between both countries to release prisoners, Masum said: “The implementation must be based on certain procedures and the presidency will propose to the head of the house of representatives its willingness in ratifying the decision.
“As for those prisoners who were convicted of crimes and were sentenced to the death but their death sentences were commuted to life sentences, there is no harm in transferring them back to their country.”
