This refers to Abdulateef Al-Mulhim’s article on Karl Andree, the man who instead of spending his retired life in his home country, indulged in illegal activities that too in a foreign country like Saudi Arabia. (“Andree, you knew better,” Oct. 19)
As a British expatriate, I’m lucky enough to be working in Saudi Arabia for a short while and I have little sympathy for Andree.
It is interesting however to note that during a recent short vacation that I spent in Britain last week when the story about Andree broke in the British press, most people I found were supporting Andree and criticizing the punishment that was handed to Andree.
It took me some effort to try to get them to understand that the law is the law and that if you work in a foreign country you must obey their laws and customs. Andree knew perfectly well that he was breaking the law and what the punishment would be if he was caught. I hope he will soon return to UK, a better person after the experience. — Julian Snell, Alkhobar
