JEDDAH: The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has called on the Justice Ministry to increase the number of special courts and judges around the country to help tackle a backlog of cases in some areas.
There was also a need to ensure more judges that could deal with cases involving women, said Bandar Al-Aiban, president of the HRC, according to a report in a local publication on Wednesday.
Al-Aiban made the comments at an HRC seminar entitled “The role of the judiciary in the protection of human rights,” attended by Justice Minister Waleed Al-Samaani. He said the law stipulates that the judiciary is independent and therefore an important protector of human rights.
He said the judiciary has seen significant developments in recent times, including legislation passed that has strengthened various arms including the Court of Grievances. “Lawyers play an important role in protecting the rights of people,” he said.
