Saudi gets 12 years for terrorism

JEDDAH: The Special Criminal Court in Riyadh sentenced a Saudi man to 12 years in prison after convicting him of joining Al-Qaeda in Yemen.
The man was also convicted of covering up the terrorist group’s plans of targeting police sations in the Sharurah region in Najran Province.
Earlier, the judge issued a preliminary ruling on the defendant’s case, who was charged with disobedience to the ruler; traveling to "locations of sedition;" fighting in Yemen in order to join Al-Qaeda; staying there and training in its camps in the use of weapons, making car bombs and explosives, and learning to conceal them from law enforcement agencies.
The man was also convicted of concealing an order of an Al-Qaeda member in Yemen to return to Sharurah to carry out terrorist acts in the region, his knowledge of members of the terrorist group while in Yemen and their plans to target one of the Border Guard centers in Sharurah, and failure to inform security authorities of such plans at the time.
He was also convicted of attempting to carry out a suicide attack inside Yemeni territory for Al-Qaeda with a car bomb; his pledge of allegiance to the leader of the Daesh terrorist group; and his communication through social media (Twitter) with members of Al-Qaeda.
In addition to the 12-year prison term, the man was banned from travel for 12 years after completion of his prison term.
