RIYADH: The Ministry of Education has ordered an immediate investigation into reports of abuse of children by a teacher at an international school in Al-Mansoura district in Riyadh.
The teacher is accused of burning pupils with a lighter and leaving burn marks on their bodies. According to sources quoted in the local media, the abused children were about four years old and all were in kindergarten.
The parents of one child called the police and requested action against the teacher.
A medical report from Al-Eman Hospital in Riyadh confirmed that the children had been burned by a lighter.
Ali Al-Ghamdi, an official spokesman at the Riyadh Education Department, said the school where the abuse occurred is known, and the principal has been contacted for details of the incidents.
An emergency committee from the Private Education Section at the ministry has been formed and investigations are in progress. An official statement will be issued once investigations have been completed, Al-Ghamdi added.
In another school-related incident, fire broke out in Primary Girls School No. 293 and Civil Defense units were dispatched to the scene.
According to Al-Ghamdi, the fire broke out on Thursday morning and the girls escaped unharmed.
He said the fire originated in a storage room on the third floor. He added that the girls were taken to Intermediate School 154 and Civil Defense teams were called to the scene.
He stressed that investigations were underway to determine the causes of the fire in coordination with the safety and security directorate in Riyadh education.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Al-Mirshed, director general of education in Riyadh, issued a directive to all schools to place the Saudi Vision 2030 in a prominent position in their headquarters as an encouragement for everyone to achieve its goals.
Education Minister Ahmad Al-Issa met university students to listen to their suggestions and discuss the challenges they face in their studies. They also discussed the role of university students in creating a positive environment inside the university.
