JEDDAH, 16 November — Spikers of Dr. Erfan & Bagedo General Hospital outclassed King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSH&RC) 15-14 in a rematch in the championship title fight in the much-awaited 2nd Invitational Inter-Cooperative Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
In the first set, KFSH&RC displayed a solid game but Dr. Erfan ladies with Captain ball Arlene stole the game from KFSH and registered 15-14 points. In the 2nd set it was Gina with 4 points who directed the game for the KFSH ladies; she tossed the ball for a timely spike for Debbie, Carol or Nilda. While Ligaya returned the ball with precise two fisted backhand hammer drive and concluded the set with a score of 15-12 points. In the 3rd set, the hard court operator Gina directed Carol to attack the net while Debbie, Nilda, Ethel and Ligaya concluded the set with a combined 15-3 points. In the 4th set Dr. Erfan ladies tried to come back with the heroics of Shed at 5 points. Nilda, Gina, Ligaya and Ethel capitalized on the situation to conclude the game with a combined 15 points against 13 points for Dr. Erfan and claimed the championship medal. SkyFreight Forwarders (Emy de Guzman), Singapore Airlines (Robert Rosario), Pioneer Allianz Life Assurance Corp. (Edesia General Agent), and CAP (Cesar Lontok) offered trophies and prizes.
Earlier, Saudi German Hospital claimed the 2nd runner-up title. First game started with 2nd runner-up contenders Saudi German Hospital versus King Fahd Armed Forces Hospital. Playing coach Ms. Vangie Pascual did serious business and put Rachel, Thess and Cathy with 5,4,3 points respectively on the defensive line while she attacked the net with Connie and Liza at one point each to conclude the first set at 15-4.
Coach Abdulkadir of SGH couldn’t believe the outcome of the first set and summoned the triangular offense of Mabarit, Toletino and Solomon who responded with 5,3,2 points respectively while Toling and Tagle responded with 3,2 points to end the set at 15-4 in SGH favor.
The is even at 1-1, in the 3rd and deciding set was a different story, SGH established an early lead at 5-1, however, Vangie issued 6 consecutive points and silenced the boisterous fans and the bench of SGH and changed lead at KFAFH favor. Thess followed with 4 points; at 7-11 KFAH’s favor; in the ensuing play, lady luck has switch to the German ladies with the triangular offense of coach Abdulkadir responded with a combined 13 points and Toling with 2 points to conclude the final score of 15-13 Saudi German Hospital claiming the 2nd runner-up title.
