JEDDAH, 24 November — The Al-Galleria squash court — the scene of exploits of legends like Jahangir Khan — once again reverberated with top class action. It was reminiscent of the squash glory of yesteryears with fans cheering every good stroke.
In a thrilling encounter that went the full distance, the experienced Andre El Ghawi pipped Nabil Sultani 9-7, 9-10, 4-9, 9-4, 10-8 in the final to win top honors in the Al-Galleria squash competition here late on Thursday night.
The much younger and fitter Nabil fought back after losing the first game to take the next two in a match marked by keen competition but also praiseworthy sportsman spirit.
However, adopting good positional play and using his wide repertoire of strokes, Andre drew level by claiming the fourth game and forcing the issue into a decider.
In the fifth game, Andre raced away to 3-0, only to see Nabil catch up and forge ahead at 5-3. He maintained the lead at 7-5 but at this stage missed an easy drop shot to allow Andre to bounce back.
Conserving his energy and often looking back to see his rival’s position before playing a stroke, Andre saved two match points at 7-8 and drew level at 8-8. At this crucial stage, Nabil seemed to lose concentration as Andre won the game and match with two delicate strokes.
The match was indicative of the fact that squash was once again on the upswing after losing its popularity over the years.
"Yes, I was worried when the match went into the decider because Nabil is much younger and fitter. I feel my experience proved useful for me. I would like to achieve a greater degree of fitness," said Andre after the match.
"Of course, Andre is very experienced. He also has a wide variety of strokes. I need to learn a lot and also to improve my fitness," said Nabil.
Veteran Taher Khan introduced the finalists to the spectators before the match.
Earlier, in the match to decide the third place, Firas Naseef easily defeated Omar Bridaoui 9-1, 9-1, 9-2 in straight games.
Adnan Mously was the match referee and had a firm grip on the proceedings.
In preliminary round matches, Andre defeated Saleh Heshmel 9-1, 9-0, 9-2, Nabil got the better of Hani Agha 9-5, 9-6, 9-6, Firas Naseef overcame Zouhair Nour 9-0, 9-6, 9-1 and Omar Bridaoui got past Mazen Hambazaza 9-1, 9-5, 9-7.
The prize distribution ceremony was held immediately after the final match.
Abdur Rahman Naseef, Arab News Editor in Chief Khaled Al-Maeena and Dr. Abdul Aziz Balila were the guests of honor and distributed the glittering cups and medals to the winners. Al-Galleria manager Nabeel Bakeer, ably assisted by Francis Andrew, worked hard to make the tournament a huge success.
