JEDDAH, 8 February — LG Electronics, Korean manufacturer of home appliances and consumer electronics, has announced commencement of "LG Table Tennis Tournament", starting from the first week of March.
H. K. Seo, general manager of LG in Saudi Arabia and Marketing Manager S. M. Arshad addressed a press conference held at the LG office in Jeddah, on Wednesday.
Seo informed the media that the LG Table Tennis Tournament was an invitational tournament, which will have participation of table tennis teams from major business concerns.
Most non-professional players from the Western Region are expected to put up a tough fight for various categories of winners.
The tournament will be organized by Jeddah Table Tennis League, which will conduct the draws upon receipt of registration applications by Feb. 28.
The LG management will award singles, doubles and team trophies, and the winners will also receive various LG products along with the trophies. Final matches will be played on grand scale and in style. "Tough competition is expected", Seo added.
LG plans to hold a grand opening ceremony for this tournament, which will be dubbed as the "Pingoff’ ceremony, and all participating teams will be present for the show match.
Finals will be held toward the end of April and regular matches will be held over the weekend. A grand prize distribution ceremony is also on the calendar.
Addressing the press conference, S. M. Arshad emphasized the importance of participation of business entities, in social activities. He said "such activities demonstrate our will to become a part of the society where we conduct business". Arshad said, "This is our first table tennis tournament and we shall organize more on larger scale, which will promote table tennis as a sport".
LG Electronics has sponsored various sporting events in the recent past and this will be the first experience with table tennis as a tool to reach out to the people.
Last year LG sponsored a tennis tournament which drew attention, thus during the year 2002 LG also intends to organize another tennis tournament.
