There isn’t a single country in the comity of nations that opposes peace and supports war or violence. This is logical because peace is the ultimate goal of all human beings. Apart from war there are other lethal, man-made catastrophes that threaten our existence on earth such as the environmental pollution. Therefore, the international community without exception is keen to make nuclear nations dispose its arsenals of atomic weapons as well as other weapons of mass destruction. However this is only a pipe dream as the United States sees things differently. American people want to see their country freed from nuclear weapons. In fact, during the Cold War, nuclear weapons served as a deterrent factor. Superpowers were convinced that anyone who uses nuclear weapons is a loser.

But now the Pentagon has approved a new strategic plan for the use of atom power. Under the new plan Washington is to use nuclear capability not when the US interests are threatened. This strategy is completely different from that was in vogue during the Cold War years when the US was to use nuclear weapons only when it was under threat.

Now the United States has prepared a list of countries to be attacked with nuclear weapons — Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, China, North Korea and also Russia in case of a conflict. A report was released by the US defense secretary, published by the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times and put on the Internet serving notice on these foreign countries. Meanwhile, the US nuclear research labs are developing nuclear bombs that could penetrate bunkers built underground. The report indicated that the US has spied on over 10,000 underground military installations located in 70 nations around the world. Among this massive installations, there are many that contain weapons of mass destruction and long range ballistic missiles. As the US lacks appropriate weapons to deal with such secret installations, the US military experts recommended the development of special nuclear weapons that are capable of destroying such targets.

It is feared that the new US approach may compel other nuclear and non-nuclear nations to develop their nuclear arsenals. Moreover, it may compel those possessing nuclear capability to use it.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of the American people to oppose the policies of its government and remind them that to think of dropping nuclear weapon elsewhere is a very dangerous game. A limited or massive nuclear attack by the US against any foreign country will in fact lead to retaliatory strikes inside the US, given the extent of hatred and animosity against the US administration. The American people are required not to forget the horrible attacks on Hiroshima or Nagasaki and millions of people who suffered. We don’t wish to see the American people suffer as a result of their government’s aggressive policies.

In fact, the wave of hatred against the US administration is not a new phenomenon. It has been building up over the years because of Washington’s blind support to aggressors or occupiers of other people’s lands.

The US seems to have lost its balance and equanimity after the attacks of Sept. 11 and instead of making dedicated efforts for peace it is unleashing violence and war.
