RIYADH, 12 April — The tandem of Allan Malawanda (young at heart) and Jollie de Guzman (13-year-old and the youngest player in the tournament) proved to be effective. They had given much to the pleasure of the crowd and to the D’Crisscrossers’ campaign to highlight an early win record. In the same token, the Subok Lang team continued their winning salvo during the second week of the ongoing Spring Tennis Challenge 2002 Team Tennis Tournament of the Association of Filipino Tennis Players in Riyadh (AFTPR) in this action at the Al Yamama Hotel Sports Complex, every Thursday and Friday.
Second week’s day one games featured the Smashers 2 team headed by Exequiel Agbaba did a goal scoring frenzy victory at 45-33 over the E-Launchers team of Alfred Pastolero and Chito Abreau. Riding high on the exploits of the Passing Shots team captained by Fidel Lozano and Jimmy Perfas erected a lead at 43-24 against the Live Wires 2 team of Godo Sarmiento and Lando Nazareno. The leading internet service provider sponsored team Awalnet Surfers of Romy Onas and Jojo Minoza survived a mid match crisis to get the better of D’Millennium team of Paul Caballero and Ricky Cayetano at 40-37, while the WRJ Freight Forwarders team of Steve Marcial and Larry Constantino tied at 38 all, over the Lob & Volley team of Romee Masingkil and Eddie Galvez. The Al-Manhal and Spring Beverage Factory sponsored team, Subok Lang captained by Lito Ladio and Leo Gervacio scrambled a golden goal victory at 45-34 over plucky D’Specialists team of Lito Lico and Daniel Valdez. During the second week’s day two actions, the Hornets team of Jimmy Formilleza and Ardee Diaz cruised through their matches at the hard court of the Tennis Challenge at 40-36 against the E-Launchers team of Chito Abreau and Alfred Pastolero. The Al-Mohr Cargo team of Rudy Alberto and Elmer Aquino produced the performance of the day to beat the Unified team of Danny Collantes and Rogie Toledanes at 41-35. D’Crisscrossers team of Allan Malawanda and Jimi Beringuel started their campaign with a swift 41-31 win against the newcomer Siemens team of Choy Sans and Neal Perez. The Hard Ball team of Deo Pelaez and Danny Perez put on a brilliant display of shot making in their games at 46-38 over the Drop Shots team of Ray Axalan and Robert Manese.
