DAMMAM, 16 April — The Arab News-Power Horse inter-school cricket tournament will begin from Thursday at the Steidle ground in Dhahran. This was decided after the meeting of the organizing committee at the Arab News Gulf Bureau in Dammam on Sunday. The meeting, chaired by Hathem Hussein, marketing manager Eastern Province of Power Horse, was also attended by the representatives of the participating teams, Arab News Gulf Bureau Chief Saeed Haider and Iqbal Talib, general secretary of the Eastern Province Cricket Association.
Eight teams are participating in the tournament. The teams include Dhahran Academy, Rahima Academy, Asia International School, Minarat School, Saudi Arabian International School (Pakistani section) Green, SAIS (Pakistani section) White, International Indian School Red and IIS Blue.
Sikandar Farooqi represented the Rahima Academy in the meeting, while Humayun Muzaffar represented Asian International School, Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Pakistani School and Pervez Ahmad International Indian School.
The draw for the teams was made by Power Horse Marketing Manager Hussein, who re-affirmed his company’s commitment for the promotion of cricket, especially among the schools children. He said sporting activities were as important as studies. He said in an addition to cricket his company was ready to promote other sporting activities in the region. “Sports and our energy drink Power Horse go together,” he said.
Iqbal Talib explained the rules and regulations of the tournament and hoped that the game would be played in true cricketing tradition.
He said tournament will be of 20 overs-a-side. The teams are divided in to two groups and will be played on league-cum-knockout basis. ICC rules will be applicable in the tournament. The opening match will be played between Dhahran Academy and Rahima Academy. The match will start at 1.45 in the afternoon. The finals of the tournament will be played on May 2 on the same ground.
