Experts and advisors are nowadays working behind closed doors in both Jerusalem and Washington. One of the hot topics is how to design a Palestinian state that is weak in order to help Israel’s expansionist policies. In addition, the plan must be acceptable to Israel and also serve US interests and goals in the region.
A year ago I wrote an article when Sharon the Butcher became Israel’s prime minister. In that article I said that the US was more keen than ever to see an independent Palestinian state. My predictions were based on US endeavors during the Balkan conflict and the resolutions imposed on Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Serbs, with absolute support from the Europeans and complete silence from the US, ensured the blocking of any efforts to establish an independent Muslim government on the pretext that it would represent a future danger to Europe. The Serbs, in order to achieve their goal, committed genocide and atrocities, threw bodies into mass graves, demolished mosques and Muslim buildings in an endeavor to abolish any sign of an Islamic heritage. They also committed rapes, destruction of property and farms and displacement of native people in a bid to expel them to other regions. The Europeans kept shamelessly silent and the UK protected the Serb’s plan until they finished their dirty war against defenseless Muslims.
Washington, however, was watching the scenario from a distance and it stepped in when both Bosnia and Herzegovina became nothing but history. The US role in the Balkans was designed to show the US as the savior of freedom and peace so the US summoned the warring parties to meet in Dayton. In Dayton, the leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina had no choice but to accept the conditions dictated by Washington.
It seems that the same scenario is now taking shape in Palestine. After the Israelis have officially recognized the Palestinian state, Israel suddenly ignores peace accords and halts the peace negotiations and is determined to abort all plans for the establishment of a independent Palestinian state.
As the Serbs did, Sharon has been determined to abolish past endeavors for peace. He began to increase tensions and then launched his military operations and terrorist acts against the Palestinians. Israel spared no one during their massacres — not children, women, the elderly, not houses, farms, and even Palestinian Authority’s installations and infrastructure. Amid silence from the international community and blind support from the US, Israel continued to commit more atrocities against the defenseless Palestinians.
Israel’s state terrorism would not exist without internal and external support. The latest poll in Israel shows that 80 percent of Israelis support Sharon’s inhumane actions which Israel’s hard liners and fanatics certainly agree with. Externally, the Europeans have retreated from their previous positions. In fact, the Europeans have called for continued peace negotiations and now they are asking Israel to halt military operations.
The US further plays games in order to give Sharon ample time to finish his genocide and the destruction of the Palestinian Authority’s infrastructure. Is there a concealed plan to impose a dismantled Palestinian state? The proposed regional conference, if it becomes reality, will only serve Sharon’s plans that aim at a weak and powerless Palestinian state.
