JEDDAH, 10 May — KIA Motors recorded three straight wins against UPC 68-65 in Seiko-JBLIC year 2002 basketball tournament played at COCG basketball court here in Industrial City State phase 1. KIA Motors showed heart to stop the rampaging UPC Warriors who in need to win the game to be able to maintain their contention in the semifinals series. UPC Warriors were leading up to third quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter, coach Boy Parto instructed his wards to apply the man-to-man defense and trap the ballcarrier of UPC Warriors. The plan paid well for KIA Motors when UPC committed back to back turnovers in the last two minutes of the game. Again, Tancio a MVP contender of this tournament made the difference, escaping his defense and scored the winning basket. Tancio topscored with 17 points for KIA Motors while Diaz scored 25 points for UPC Warriors.
In the next game, Giordano Fashion beat Jedac Impact 88-79. Both teams displayed good offensives plays. Giordano Fashions took a 6-0 salvo with 3 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Jedac Impact with Alpuerto and Wasawas took over the scoring load from Abbas, Waleed and Diaz tried hard to keep the game at bay. Giordano Fashions applied running game to contain Jedac Impact in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter. Apolinario and Alipio scored 34 and 24 points for Giordano Fashions while Alpuerto and Wasawas scored 37 and 17 points respectively for Jedac Impact.
In Friday’s game, United Carton sealed the final seat with 80-77 victory over Seiko-Butler. United Carton relied on the heroics plays of Inoc who pounded the defense thrown to him. Seiko-Butler needed to win the game to qualify into the tie break system. Hanzel Olivo tried hard to maintain the intensity of the game with Borbon and Arce alternately attacked the defensive wall of United Carton. With 30 seconds remaining in the final period, Asuncion — a veteran player of United Carton got free from his defense and took a six feet jumper to grab the lead. In the next possession, Seiko-Butler unleashed a desperation jumper to tie the score but the ball bounced the rim and the buzzer sounded. Inoc topscored with 23 points for United Carton while Olivo scored 21 points for Seiko-Butler.
In the next game, Basahm-Goody beat FFP Sunbulah 96-83. Basahm-Goody displayed awesome firepower in their run and gun offense with Rongavilla, Centeno and Tato run havoc all-over the floor. FFP-Sunbulah playing without Batarao and Domingo manage to keep the game at bay with Villanueva took charge the scoring department with Cadingan and Serrano supporting the assault. Basahm Goody applied trapping defense with only 2 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to contain FFP Sunbulah. Rongavilla and Centeno scored 29 and 26 points respectively for Basahm Goody while Villanuave topscored with 25 points for FFP Sunbulah.
