JEDDAH, 10 May — Glenn Tolo of El Khereji Corporation eliminated Ali Saif of Al Hilal Establishment and advanced to the second bracket.
Another bracket one winner is Edgar Mallari of Saudi Telephone Company.
Early winner Tolo and Mallari clashed for the next post of the stepladder. In game one Mallari missed the white while pieces opportunity in game two. Tolo was losing but pulled a rabbit out of his hat with a spoof threat turn out successful.
Tolo’s next opponent is Alex Dampil of King Faisal Naval Base for No. 5 position.
At the upper level of the stepladder chart Marvin Franco of Al Bashawri Optical managed to put Irshad Hussain of Trans Desert under pressure with his repertoire of Queens Gambit opening. Hussain faced a tight game and did not get time to attack and forced to play defensive. Although the match ran into a best-of-two games or equivalent to one hour per game Hussain failed to face the flurry of moves and the intense attack that was thrown at him in second game and giving Franco a shot in the next round.
No. 8 Jan Muhammad of Jeddah Municipality defeated No. 7 Ronald Eugenio of Saudi International Trading and Marketing Limited who offered little resistance in game one to the Afgahni tactics and strong strategy. The last act of the second game Jan sacrificed his rook for a pawn. Eugenio’s remaining pieces in the tournament of square is a king and a bishop. Jan wrapped the game at 1.5 points and 0.5 point for Eugenio. Jan Muhammad and Marvin Franco’s match was reschedule to May 10. The winner of this dual meet will see action against No. 6 Emad Al Habeeb of Saudi Arabian Airlines.
