JEDDAH, 1 October — Sharjah and southern Indian city of Hyderabad are Qatar Airways’ new destinations from Jeddah that become effective from its upcoming winter timetable, according to Shabbir Dharsi, the airline’s new area manager for the Western Province. It will operate weekly two flights to Sharjah and three flights to Hyderabad, he told Arab News yesterday. The airline also intends to fly daily from here to Doha instead of five flights a week now. “In the post-Sept. 11 situation, we did very well because vacationers from here mostly traveled to other parts of the Gulf instead of traveling to the West as in the past,” said Dharsi who worked with different airlines here from 1974-89. The airline, which has Qatar government’s 51 percent equity participation, was established in 1994 and within a year started operating to the Kingdom. The airline was restructured in 1997. “Our track record has been good,” he said, adding that skilled and semiskilled labor, and businessmen traveling to the Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East had been mostly using the airline. The airline’s current tally of 37 destinations will reach 50 by 2005 and its fleet of 17 aircraft will go up to 30 by 2006, according to Dharsi. (K.S.R.)
