JEDDAH, 25 October — Sri Lankan International School-Jeddah staged its inter-house sports meet yesterday when each of its students took part in at least two events. Sri Lankan Consul General A.C.M. Ibrahim, the chief guest, ceremoniously opened the annual event.
The four-year-old school, which has student strength of 177 studying up to ninth level, held 20 events separately for boys and girls in different age groups. Children of various houses, identified by color, cheered their contestants as events took place in quick succession. Cheers became loud in events like slow cycling and balloon blowing.
The balloon-blowing event turned out to be interesting as there was a long gap in the blowing of balloon between the first and second contestants. The race involved the blowing and bursting of the balloon and running to the other end.
Under-5 boys and girls competed in lime and spoon and bunny hop races. Filling the basket was the event for under-7 boys and girls. Under-13 boys and under-9 girls took part in ball passing.
Other events included under-7 baton pass, under-13 girls skipping race, under-15 and over-15 boys slow cycling, under-9 girls three-legged race, under-7 boys blowing balloons, under-7 girls 30 meter race, under-9 boys 40 meter race, under-9 girls dressing up, under-11 girls and boys 50 meter race, and under-5 fancy dress. A drill display followed the distribution of certificates to winners by the chief guest.
The function ended with a march past by students with Ibrahim taking the salute. The chief guest congratulated young participants and lauded their enthusiasm and sportsman spirit. School Principal S.A. Rahuman personally supervised the annual event.
A large number of parents were present along with members of the Sri Lankan Expatriates Society. "Every school student took part in at least two events, including drill or march past and an athletic event," a spokesman for the school said.
