ALKHOBAR, 8 January 2003 — Supervising Welfare Officer Sotero Tornea, Jr. lauded the APO Dhahran Alumni for their humanitarian projects for the distressed OFWs in the Eastern Region and for its generous donations made to the foundations and organizations back in his speech at their induction ceremony.
Tornea said that APO Dhahran Alumni should continue its humanitarian assistance extended to the distressed OFWs.
He noted that APO group here had also sent help to the Bantay Bata Foundation and other welfare groups in Manila.
Incoming president Ernesto Sangalang said in his speech that the APO-Dhahran Alumni Association had donated 100,000 pesos worth of medicines and 50,000 pesos cash to the Pediatrics Department of the Philipine General Hospital.
This will directly help the poor children confined at the said Hospital.
Outgoing president Rex Figueroa also said that the group donated $300 to the Bantay Bata Foundation.
The group also sent a ton of used clothes and 16,000 pesos to the inmates of Bilibid Prison at Muntinglupa.
This year, APO considered helping the Philipine National Red Cross, Figueroa said. "It is always our aim to share whatever we have to our less fortunate brothers and sisters in the Philippines," he said.
Tornea inducted the 2003 set of officers of the Alpha Phi Omega, Dhahran Alumni Association, at the Park Hotel in Alkhobar.
The induction ceremonies also coincided with APO’s observance of the 77th Year International Anniversary of this service fraternity and sorority group. The event was attended by all its local members, families and friends.
The other 2003 officers are Elwyn Goling, Executive vice-president; Alex Santos, VP for planning and special projects; Jowell Joyno, VP for membership; Alex Uriarte, VP for sports development; Larry Gustilo, secretary; Leo Costales, treasurer; Espie Gumia, auditor; Henry Macasaet, coordinator; and council of advisers members Virgilio Guevarra, Bobby Manansala, Danny Suratos, Rex Figueroa, and Roger Tugade.
