JEDDAH, 9 January 2003 — A Yemeni expatriate jumped from the third floor of a court building here in an attempt to commit suicide, Al-Madinah newspaper reported yesterday. The paper said the man escaped with serious injuries to his neck and was taken to King Fahd Hospital. He was earlier sentenced to one year in jail and 300 lashes for blasphemy in a case filed by a friend who shared an apartment with him in Jeddah’s Safa district. According to Al-Madinah, the case was filed after the man made abusive remarks about the religion and attacked his friend who invited him to perform prayers.
