DAMMAM, 21 January 2003 — The Ministry of Communications has sanctioned SR260 million for road projects in the Eastern Province.
Othman Abahsain, director general of the communications department in Dammam, confirmed that the allocation is for the repair and maintenance of roads and highways in the region, adding that the ministry has set aside SR85 million for the repair and renovation of Dammam-Abu Haidaryah Highway.
Some SR65 million has also been dedicated to Dammam-Jubail Highway.
The department has sanctioned SR30 million for the maintenance of other highways and roads in the region and set aside SR80 million to meet any shortfall or future projects.
During the past two years, the ministry has elevated the renovation and construction of roads in the province as a top priority.
The most important projects were the widening of Dhahran Street and King Abdul Aziz Street in Alkhobar. Both projects are finished and the new roads have been partially opened to traffic.
Once complete, the entire new road network will not only transform the look of Alkhobar but also ease traffic congestion.
Residents of Alkhobar and Dammam say that there is now a need to widen minor roads and lanes in the city centers. Although the road leading to Alkhobar city center has been widened, the one leading to Dammam city center remains as it was. As a result, it is a scene of continual traffic jams during peak hours, most especially on weekends.
