RIYADH, 21 January 2003 — Prince Alwaleed ibn Talal, chairman of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC), has donated SR100,000 to the Saudi Sports Federation for Special Needs.
The donation was in response to an official letter submitted to Prince Alwaleed from the president of Saudi Youth Federation and the president of the Saudi Sports Federation for Special Needs, Prince Sultan ibn Fahd, who requested Prince Alwaleed’s support to the federation.
“The donation will be used to help finance the federation’s many projects that aim to develop the current 12 sports centers for people with special needs in the country. The centers cater to over 3,600 athletes who suffer from various disabilities,” KHC announced in a press release issued here yesterday.
The sports center for persons with special needs in the Riyadh region received an excellence trophy for winning five tournaments in several areas of Saudi Arabia last year.
Prince Alwaleed had earlier honored the players and administration members of the Saudi Sports Federation for Special Needs on Dec. 29 last year.
He gave the federation with checks worth SR300,000 to honor the federation’s team for achieving first place in the Gulf Cooperation Council’s 21st Sports Championship for Special Needs, held in Riyadh from April 27-May 3 last year. The players also won several gold, silver and bronze medals.
On Feb. 12 last year, Prince Alwaleed presented checks worth SR200,000 to Saudi Arabia’s strength national team for persons with mental disabilities for winning two silver medals in the World Athletic Championship for Persons with Mental Disabilities, which was held in Tunisia on June 27-July 1, 2001.
The national team also won several gold, silver and bronze medals in the 20th Sports GCC Championship for Special Needs that was held in Qatar on Dec. 15-19 last year.
