JEDDAH, 7 February 2003 — Ruben Medina unleashed incredible shots on the final stretch and led Top Gun claiming the team of the week award at the resumption of the Tuesday Night League organized by the Brotherhood Bowling Group (BBG), at the Jeddah Bowling Center. Top Gun hit 67 points.
Top Gun captain Medina fired nine consecutive strikes for a whooping 268 in the last game and brought the 5-man team series to 1,083 pins including handicap (18 points).
With a three-game series of 629 and the assists in equal sets by the quartet of Goying Salazar (612), Leo Edejer (610), Rudy Valenzuela (598) and Bert Tuvera (586), Top Gun claimed 18 bonus points for submitting the highest total (3,035) after all the team scores were tallied.
Top Gun’s game on the last leg anchored their rank for the third slot with a running score of 494.5 points, and it sliced the lead of front-runners to 6.5 points against Al Sayaad Establishment (501) and 12.5 points with the number one Al Alamiah Insketos (507).
Comfort Fabric Softener and Al Sayaad Establishment were racing neck-to-neck in the search for points and were on a dead heat after three games at 44 points apiece. When all of the team scores were ranked and the bonus points were awarded, the duo ended in a cliff-hanger. Comfort Fabric Softener outscored Al Sayaad Establishment by one point (61-60) when the former snatched a bonus of 17 (2,971) while the latter only got 16 (2,964).
In other games, Cab Fare flagged down 55 points. Al Saddiq pocketed 50. SPIC rolled off 48. SkyFreight Forwarders delivered 43 points.
Al Alamiah Insektos scored 42.5. The International Team shot 40. Al Zamil Heavy Industries produced 37 points.
PICPA Pro received 35-point credits. LVNJ posted 30 points. Thunderball hit 30.5. Speed Sports Club ran away with 28 points. Zuhair Faiz Partnership registered 26 points. Tuesday Spoilers amassed 19. The Seiko-PNB team collected 8 points.
Joey Salvador of Comfort Fabric Softener snatched the bowler of the week award at three-game series of 678. Equipped with an 8-pin handicap per game, Salvador drilled scratch scores of 216, 212 and 226. In accordance with the rules, however, the prize will be awarded to Rally Zamora who scored the second highest series (658) at the lines of 202, 231 and 225. Ruben Medina of Top Gun and Rudy Punzalan of Al Sayaad Establishment were the winners of the seven-bagger fun game.
Abdul Birung of Zuhair Fayez and Pancho Cuevas of the International Team received special prizes for converting into spare the 5-7 split.
Cyril Balasico of Al Sayaad Establishment won a gift for converting into spare the 4-7-10 split.
Ed Labuac of Al Saddiq and Larry Santos of Cab Fare were ‘sakuna’ awardees, a prize given to a bowler who makes a strike without hitting first the headpin.
Top Gun’s Ruben Medina submitted his first entry card to the BBG Elite Club. His score was 268.
On the 11th playing week, Saudi Arabian Yousef Akbar cornered the elusive bowler of the week award in record style while Thunderball bowling team set aflame the Jeddah Bowling Center.
Yousef, member of the Saudi Arabian National Youth squad, swept a total score of 705 to set a new record in the high series scratch. His scores of 259, 233 and 213 erased the 700 mark made on the 4th week by Roger Dacquioag of SPIC.
Thunderball quintet of Majid Aslani, Abdullah Harbi, Wadee Mohammad, Abdullah Hobani and Jaffer Al Katheri set JBC aflame through the match, scored 68 points for the week’s top honors in the team category.
The quintet set ablaze JBC on the second game, burned a total of 1098 pins and claimed the maximum 18 points. On the final game, the quintet set afire with 1,033 pins to mould 17 solid points. Thunderball collected 18 bonus points for submitting 3073 pins in three games including the 942 pins blasted at the start (15 points).
Although there were other teams that registered higher points than Speed Sports Club, the prize for the team award will be presented to them as per the existing rules. LVNJ had 65 points but had already received the prize on the 8th week.
PICPA-Pro (62.5) had their share on the 6th, Al Alamiah Insektos (56) on the 9th, Comfort Fabric Softener (53.5) received their prize on the 7th, Al Saddiq (534) on the 2nd week, Cab Fare (41) on the 5th, Top Gun (40) on the 10th, Al Sayaad (former Otra Cosa) had it on the third week. Speed Sports Club registered 37 points.
Hashim Guinomla of the Al Alamiah Insectos scored 268 for his second entry to the BBG Elite Bowler’s Club. Yousef Akbar and Majid Aslani joined the Club by submitting their entry passes with a score of 259 and 256, respectively.
Danny Manriza of Tuesday Spoilers won a prize for conjuring into spare the 4-7-10 split.
Abdullah Al Harbi of Thunderball was the last winner of a special prize for converting into spare the 5-10 split.
In a related development, the Filipino Overseas Bowlers of Riyadh (FOBR) is hosting the 2003 Hajj Goodwill Games under the auspices of the Philippine Embassy through the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office. The Games will start on February 11 through 14, 2003.
Cash prizes and electronic gift items await for the lucky winners in the 5-man team event, trio, doubles, singles and master’s events.
