RIYADH, 21 February 2003 — Marikudu Smashers and Netters found themselves on the lucky side of the road whipping D’Equalizers group and the Abdullah Fouad Co. Tennis team in the continuing games of the AFTP Winter Tennisfest.
Marikudu Smashers team continued its campaign on a winning note, shaking off a lethargic start to beat at 42-40 another aspirant team D’Equalizers group of Benny and Marlon dela Cruz while the Centennial Restaurant Aces team of Ariel Palmero and Rey Beninsig stretched their lead to a 43-35 against the Aces & Faults team of Noli Orejas and Rolly Torres.
At the Center Court 3, D’Racqueteers 2A group of Lito Ladio and Edgar Santos held off repeated rallies to post a 43-31 win against the Perfect Bullet team of Robert Romero and Noli Orejas. Netters team of Romy Guevarra and Robert Romero in the B/C Category got a game high point to spark to a 37-30 victory over the Abdullah Fouad Co. Tennis team of Robert Manuel and Jimmy Formilleza. Earlier in the ABC Category, the King Abdulaziz Military Academy’s Power Brokers team headed by Felix Pacleb and Danny Collantes took advantage and delivered a monster game to a big 46-21 conquest of the Star Crossers team captained by Art Jovellano and Chito Abreau at the Center Court.
The Saudi Telecom team of Dennis Pangilinan and Ramon Montales clipped the wings of the Klasmeyts mentored by Ed Galvez and Paul Pagulayan at 42-33. The Saudi Electric Company’s Powerlines High Voltage team of Godo Sarmiento and Wilfredo Nicolas started their matches with confidence breaking at 38-33 their rival, the equally strong Passing Shots team of Lito Anolacion and Tisoy de Leon.
Other matches saw the Maffi-A group of Ramon Montales and Ronnie Bigtas too tough for the Smashing Pumpkins of Angel Aniag at 48-21, while the Racqueteers 2B of Jigs Garcia and Manny Berro proved too strong for the No Fear Kings of Rey Sanchez and Bong Bueta at 47-24.
The Aces & Faults squad rallied to force a big lead at 43-35 against the Specialists 2 team of brothers Cris and Alex Alviedo. The SOMC Fighters of Alfred Pastolero and Rod Tango marched on towards another victory over the Esprit Timewear Netters team at 41-25.
In a revenge scenario, the Abdullah Fouad Co. Tennis team sealed an easy win against the off-form Riles Homers Barkada of Rolly Idpan and Jimmy Pastrana at 47-36.These continuing games of the AFTP Winter Tennisfest are being played at the Al Yamama Hotel Sports Complex along Old Airport Road, Riyadh every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
