JEDDAH, 21 February 2003 — On the 14th playing match in the Tuesday Night League at the Jeddah Bowling Center here, Ruben Medina sent to oblivion the handicap record (712) of Sid Lapena when he swept a series of 738 while Al Alamiah stalwart Hashim Guinomla beat Yousef Akbar (705) with 716. Medina commenced his game by firing a solid pocket strike on the second frame and went on till the 7th for a whopping 268, shooting a series of strikes on the final lap for a high 252.
Equipped with an 8-pin handicap per game, Medina submitted 738, a new record in the high series with handicap. On a separate pair of lanes, Class ‘O’ bowler Hashim Guinomla scored 257 that rounded up his game to a total of 716.
His 234, 225 and 257 erased the old high series scratch mark of 705 set by Yousef Akbar on the 11th playing match and eclipsed the sterling performances of Ruben Medina (714). Pilipina posted a total score of 679 (214, 217 and 248). Pilipina’s teammate Mario Cabrera cued along with him anticipating to snatch the chance with his handicap of 48 but his so-so finish at 190 merely summed up his efforts to 660.
Rising star Saudi Arabian Abdullah Al-Harbi also joined the wagon of contenders. His 72-pin handicap boosted his chances after toppling down 219 and 203 in the last two games but his poor start (155) pulled him out of the race. His total was only 649.
Nap Patayan of Al Zamil Heavy Industries, holding a total handicap of 24, was also among the pack after posting an encouraging 244. On the second set, however, he scored a low 172 that squandered his chances in spite of the 211 game on the last leg. In the team category, Al Zamil Heavy Industries produced 64 points, past the powerhouse team of Top Gun by half of a point to snatch the team of the week award. Al Zamil processed 17 points at the start (1041), 12 points at the succeeding set (1001) and 17 on the last delivery (1005).
Their series of 3101 bagged 18 points after all scores were tapered down with the maximum 18 points to the highest series and one point to the lowest. Manning the scoring machines were Rey Pormilda, Gil Ordonez, Allan Sanoza, Rene Santiago and Nap Patayan. Top Gun took the checkered flag and the big 18 points after hitting 1054 including handicap but their two succeeding games merely hit 18.5 points and was given a bonus of 17 points for registering 3080 pins. Ruben Medina led the gunners in shooting the target. Cab Fare quintet of Mario Cabrera, Ed Ferrer, Rutherford Pilipina, Boy Casio and Larry Santos delivered 62 points for scoring a series of 3047 (16 points) at the lines of 988 (14), 1040 (16) and 1019 (16). Majid Aslani of Thunderball won a special prize for connecting seven consecutive strikes. Igna Salgado won a sakuna award for making a strike without first hitting the headpin. On the 15th playing match, Hashim Guinomla returned to center stage with a high 734. He unerringly seared the lanes with 9 strikes after a spare at the start and scored 277, which is his 4th entry card to the BBG Elite Club. His succeeding games were 237 and 220. Majid Aslani of Thunderball scored the second highest series at 675 (191, 238 and 246).
Comfort Fabric Softener was the best team of the match. The quintet of Joey Salvador, Randy Mata, Ver Luz, Raul de los Reyes and Ding Abaygar swept a total of 3099 equivalent to 68 points including the bonus of 18. The ‘Spoilers’ posted 41 points. Ahmad Hobani of Thunderball was awarded of a special sakuna prize for making a strike without first hitting the head pin.
