JEDDAH, 26 February 2003 — General Electric Medical systems launched its new 4D ultrasound technology in the Middle East recently at the Arab Health Exhibition in Dubai. The technology provides live and moving three-dimensional images of unborn babies taken directly in the womb.
The product, considered to be a new dimension in obstetric imaging, will be available in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Egypt. The GE Volusion 730 is the world’s first and the only ultrasound system featuring real-time 4D technology, allowing doctors and patients to see and recognize what is being viewed inside their bodies.
Dr Hesham Youssef, general manager for the Middle East and Africa, explained, “This new ultrasound means that a mother can see her baby even before it is born. She can see the fine details of the face, body, fingers and toes. This live action ethnology brings the fourth dimension to ultrasound, making GE Voluson 730 a revolution in women’s healthcare.

The new 4D ultrasound also increases the degree of accuracy of the ultrasound-guided biopsies to 100 percent, as opposed to previous results of only 50 percent. This is so even with tumors less than 5 mm in diameter. Studies by the World Health Organization show that the new technology can save the lives of nearly 111,000 women worldwide by detecting breast cancer at an early stage.
With this unit, physicians can analyze fetal development and perform previously impossible examinations. In addition it determines fetal age, evaluates high-risk pregnancies and detects fetal abnormalities structural problems with the uterus, placental abnormalities, abnormal bleeding, entopic pregnancies as well as ovarian tumors and fibroids.
