CENTURION, South Africa, 6 March 2003 — Reigning champions Australia suffered a major World Cup blow yesterday when fast bowler Jason Gillespie was ruled out with an injury in his right heel. Gillespie announced his withdrawal from the tournament at a news conference at the SuperSport Park. “I’m shattered and disappointed but these things happen,” he told reporters.

“After losing Warne, Gillespie’s injury is a huge loss,” Australian captain Ricky Ponting said. “We’ve just have to get over it and get on with the game.” Ponting said left-arm seamer Nathan Bracken has been summoned as a replacement for Gillespie.
