ALKHOBAR, 14 March 2003 — Don Ambalong of the Saudi National Guard defeated Joe Buhia from the Jubail United Tennis Club, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the ELTA Tennis Open Men’s Singles and Classified Doubles Championship 2003 being played at the Al-Gosaibi Hotel recreation center.

Joining Ambalong in the Class A division after the second round was Mar Lucanas of ELTA who toppled 2nd seed Beck-beck Corpuz from the Filipino Expatriates Tennis Association, 4-4 (retired).

Arnold Saavedra of Jubail eliminated 2nd seed Benny Supleo of the Bankers Tennis Association, 6-4, 6-2. Gilbert Martinete also from Jubail beat Ken Pacubas of FETA, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Gabby Sandalo of SWCC trounced ELTA’s Ernie Navalta, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Max de Guzman of BTA subdued FETA’s Mike Cortez, 7-5, 7-5.

In Class C Singles, seeded players stopped their opponents’ hope to reach the quarterfinals. ELTA’s top seed Flor Catanus downed Mehmet Caglarca of Seaview Compound, 6-3, 6-1. Second seed Alex Navarro of BTA defeated Edwin Alvarez of FETA, 6-3, 6-0. Third seed Jun Cabaccang of FETA eliminated Al-Munirah’s bet Vincent Go, 6-3, 6-2. Fourth seed Rene Portillo of ELTA overpowered FETA’s Edwin Villar, 7-6, 6-4.

Still in Class C, S. Dumaoal routed Edwin Cruz, 7-5, 6-3; Romy Novelles drubbed Robert Edora, 6-2, 6-1; Manny Ramos trounced S. Reyes, 6-1, 6-0; Damie de la Cruz eased past Willie de Lara, 6-1, 6-2; Manny Acantilado beat Rommel Aguiluz, 6-2, 6-2; Mon de Pio won against Boy Andaya, 6-0, 6-1.

In Class D Doubles, second seeds Guevarra and V. Abante of Aujan defeated J. Vibal and R. Bobis of Al-Bustan, 7-5, 7-6, to enter the quarterfinals. Others results were E. Torres and D. Cruz eliminating O. Gamit/R. Azcano, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3; E. Genciana/L. Sampaguita overpowered R. Benavides/C. Sierra KFU, 7-6, 7-6; E. Bernal/L. Tapao routed D. Pelayo/E. Trinidad, 6-1, 6-2; D. Paring/M. Dona R. Autor/J. Orena, 7-6, 6-2.

In Class E Doubles, the seeded players were all eliminated in the first three rounds. Entering the quarterfinals were C. Santos/J. Ramada who dominated J. Baron/M. Cariaso, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1; G. Bael/R. Bael thrashed L. Patricio/S. Itao, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6. J. Mangampo/R. Ortiz routed A. Villanueva/J. Flores, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; R. Calumpita/R. Angkoy beat J. Bernabe/N. Cipriano, 6-2, 6-4.
