RIYADH, 15 March 2003 — Six Saudi remote aviation amateurs are preparing to participate in the international championship for remote aviation in South Africa next summer.
The team representing the Kingdom is hoping for good results in the competition.
The team was selected from about 100 electronic aviation amateurs, who meet every weekend at their club in Dhahrat Laban in Riyadh.
These amateurs have been practicing for about three years to compete to show their ability to control the aircraft.
Prince Badr ibn Fahd Al-Faisal of the aviation club told Arab News that remote aviation required exceptional skill to control the aircraft.
The planes can be controlled from a distance of up to 500 meters.
The sport has attracted large numbers of Saudi youngsters. “Remote control aviation appeals to people of all age-groups. In our club there are children under nine years and grown-ups over 50,” he pointed out.
The price of the aircraft – some locally made and some imported ranges from SR1,000 to SR20,000.
