DAMMAM, 4 April 2003 — Two people died here yesterday when a train collided with a truck, according to a statement from the Saudi Railways Organization.
At 8.58 a.m. a passenger train on its way to Riyadh collided with a truck carrying metal pipes at a crossing in Dhahran on land belonging to Saudi Aramco.
Pipes flying from the truck hit the locomotive, killing the engine driver and his assistant. The truck driver was taken to Aramco Hospital for treatment, the statement added.
The rest of the train crew and the 104 passengers escaped unhurt and were taken to Dammam, where they boarded another train. The collision did not affect cargo and passenger traffic on the line.
Preliminary information indicates that the truck failed to stop at the intersection, ignoring warning signs.
The last train accident, on March 10, 2002 in Abqaiq, resulted in the death of three crew and a security officer.
