JEDDAH, 7 April 2003 — General Motors is recalling some of its 2003 models including the 226 Cadillac CTS. The move follows a safety check on 2003 models by GM to inspect the steering shaft for a loose bolt that could cause the loss of steering control. “The condition can be fixed simply by tightening the bolt,” a GM spokesman said here yesterday.
“This is purely a precautionary measure and no incidents have been reported in the Kingdom or elsewhere in the Middle East. While retailers will be contacting owners, the owners in turn may call the retailers or the GM Customer Communications Center if they have any queries,” he added.
He said the recall also included Chevrolet Cavaliers, Chevrolet Ventures and GMC Suburbans. In the case of Chevrolet Cavaliers and Chevrolet Ventures, GM is replacing the lower pinion bearing in the power steering assembly. A potential defect in the bearing could lead to the loss of power steering when the vehicle turns left.
“The defect relates to certain 1996-98 model year Cavaliers and 1997-98 Ventures as well as a small number of 1996 Lumina APVs. As many as 1,756 vehicles in the Kingdom could be affected,” the spokesman said.
GM retailers are also recalling 1,401 GMC Suburbans of model year 2003 to install a fuel tank shield after the company determined that an accident at a certain angle could result in the tank being punctured.
