JEDDAH, 14 April 2003 — About 100 players are likely to compete in the 2nd LG Open Golf Tournament to be held at the upcoming Desert Lake Golf Club Course here.
“Participants are all amateurs and from within Saudi Arabia,” LG Electronics General Manager Ho Kyoung Seo told a press conference yesterday.
Malcolm Rees, captain of the 170-member Desert Lake Golf Club, is the chief organizer of the tournament. “The club’s course is the city’s only golf course with 18 holes. Although sandy, the ‘friendly’ course has green surface and manicured beautifully,” he said.
The competition format comprises a 3/4 handicap stroke play, with a maximum of 24 handicaps for men and 28 for ladies.
Some 30 to 40 of participants will be Koreans, said Hyung-Keun Lee, general manager of a trading establishment, who represents the local Korean golf community. The rest of the participants are mostly Westerners and five-to six Saudis, he said. “The 1st LG Open Golf Tournament held at Durrat Al-Arus last year attracted 120 participants. Six of them were Saudis,” Lee added.
“We associate golf with LG because golf represents the business philosophy of LG in terms of maximum success with minimum strokes, perfection in approach, precision handling and the will to drive for exactness,” Seo said. “We hope to make the golf tournament an annual feature.”
LG’s Deputy General Manager S.M. Arshad said the golf tournament follows the ‘successful’ 2nd table tennis tournament organized by the Korean electronics giant in the city recently. “LG is playing a leading role in organizing different types of community events.”
The tournament starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. on May 2. Entry forms are available at the clubhouse. Aside from trophies, LG products will be presented to winners in various tournament categories.
