SOTOGRANDE, Spain, 2 November 2003 — Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson bogeyed two of the last four holes but stayed two shots clear in the weather-delayed Volvo Masters second round at a blustery Valderrama yesterday.

As most of the 56-strong field battled in gusting winds, Jacobson fired a one-under-par 71, mixing four birdies, an eagle and five bogeys to finish at nine-under 135.

The Monaco-based Swede, who set the pace on day one with a brilliant 64, had extended his advantage in the European Tour’s season-ending event to six strokes with four holes remaining.

But he bogeyed the par-three 15th, after failing to get up and down from the front greenside rough, and also dropped at the par-four last, where he hit his approach into a bunker.

Jacobson lost further ground to his fast-finishing playing partner Carlos Rodiles.

Spaniard Rodiles, who had opened with a 68, collected five birdies in six holes after the turn on his way to a 69, securing second place on his own at seven under.

Denmark’s Anders Hansen was a further two strokes back in third after carding a 73, while Britain’s Greg Owen, whose five-under 67 was the best score of the round, was fourth at four-under 140.

Owen, winner of this year’s British Masters in June before back trouble began to take toll, reeled off seven birdies, including a chip-in with a nine-iron at the par-four ninth, to vault up the leaderboard.

Among the big names in the draw, Spaniard Sergio Garcia carded a second successive 71 to lie fifth at two under while six-times major champion Nick Faldo was a further shot back in a share of sixth, after a matching 71.

However defending champion Colin Montgomerie, who shared last year’s title with Bernhard Langer after they had squared the first two extra holes in gathering gloom, slipped back to one over after battling to a 74.

South Africa’s Goosen Grabs Lead at PGA Florida Event

In Palm Harbor, Florida, South Africa’s Retief Goosen fired a 5-under-par 66 — the best round of the day — to take a one-shot lead over Jose Coceres and J.J. Henry after Friday’s second round of the PGA Chrysler Championship.

Chad Campbell carded a 2-under 69 and is tied with Jerry Kelly and Charles Howell, two strokes back.

The 2001 US Open champion, Goosen is at 7-under 135 after two trips over the difficult Copperhead Course at the Westin Innisbrook.

Campbell has been even better, with three runner-up finishes among his seven top-10s. He was second at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson, tied for second two weeks later at the Honda Classic and a memorable second to Shaun Micheel at the PGA Championship.

Coceres shot 68 and Henry 67. Kelly carded 69 and Howell 71.

Briny Baird matched Goosen for the best round of the day and is tied with France’s Thomas Levet (67) at 138, one shot better than Jonathan Byrd (67).
