PITTSBURGH, 3 November 2003 — Ryan Malone scored at 2:10 of overtime to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins in NHL play on Saturday, despite playing without Mario Lemieux for the final 42 minutes.

Lemieux left the game 7:19 into the first period with a hip injury.

The Penguins star missed 54 games two seasons ago with hip problems, but the severity of his latest injury wasn’t immediately known.

The Penguins rallied in his absence, however, as Rico Fata scored a pair of goals 4:48 apart in the third period to force the overtime after Pittsburgh trailed 2-0.

Mike Knuble and P.J. Axelsson scored the goals for the Bruins, who had their six-game road winning streak snapped. Boston (6-2-2-1) out-shot the Penguins 32-28.

Devils 4 Avalanche 3

In East Rutherford, Jeff Friesen scored with 5:25 left to play in regulation to give the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Scott Niedermayer, Scott Gomez and Colin White scored the other Devils goals, while Martin Brodeur made 20 saves.

Islanders 4 Mighty Ducks 1

In Uniondale, Trent Hunter had a goal and an assist to lead the New York Islanders past the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4-1.

Alexei Yashin, Jason Blake and Oleg Kvasha scored the Islanders other goals as New York chased starter Martin Gerber by scoring three goals on the first eight shots.

Rob Niedermayer scored the lone goal for Anaheim (4-6-1-1).

Flyers 7 Maple Leafs 1

In Toronto, Sami Kapanen and Jeremy Roenick both scored a pair of goals to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 7-1 romp over the Maple Leafs. Michal Handzus, Kim Johnsson and Justin Williams all scored before the first period was eight minutes old for the other Flyers goals.

Rangers 5 Canadiens 1

In Montreal, Jamie Lundmark and Martin Rucinsky both had a goal and an assist to lead the New York Rangers to an easy 5-1 win over the Canadiens. Anson Carter, Chris Simon and Dan LaCouture scored the other goals for the Rangers.

Sabres 1 Senators 1

In Ottawa, Daniel Alfredsson scored a power play goal in the second period that lifted the Senators into a 1-1 tie with the Buffalo Sabres. Patrick Lalime made 36 saves for the Senators, who are 5-2-0-1 to start the season. Martin Biron made 34 saves for the Sabres.

Lightning 4 Hurricanes 3

In Tampa, Cory Stillman’s third period goal gave the Tampa Bay Lightning a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Tampa Bay (7-0-1) is the NHL’s only unbeaten team. Vincent Lecavalier with a pair and Martin St. Louis scored the other Lightning goals.

Sharks 6 Panthers 2

In Sunrise, Alyn McCauley fired three goals to lead the San Jose Sharks over the Florida Panthers 6-2. Jonathan Cheechoo added a pair of goals for the Sharks, while Patrick Marleau also scored for San Jose. Jay Bouwmeester and Nathan Horton with his first NHL goal scored for Florida.

Wild 2 Capitals 1

In St. Paul, Andrew Brunette and Wes Walz both scored to lead the Minnesota Wild past the Washington Capitals 2-1. The Wild has won four of five games and will have Marian Gaborik back in the line-up next week.

Blackhawks 3 Blues 2

In St. Louis, Jocelyn Thibault made 31 saves to lead the Chicago Blackhawks over the Blues 3-2. Steve Sullivan, Travis Moen with his first career goal and Nathan Dempsey also scored for the Hawks.

Stars 1 Predators 1

In Nashville, Tomas Vokoun made 27 saves to lift the Predators into a 1-1 tie with the Dallas Stars. Greg Johnson’s first period tally was the lone goal for Nashville. Rob DiMaio replied for the Stars.

Flames 3 Blue Jackets 0

In Calgary, Jamie McLennan made 15 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Flames blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0.

Jordan Leopold scored his first two goals of the season for the Flames, while McLennan earned his 11th career shutout.

Red Wings 4 Oilers 4

In Edmonton, Ethan Moreau scored with less than four minutes remaining in regulation time, leading the Oilers to a 4-4 tie with the Detroit Red Wings. Raffi Torres, Marc-Andre Bergeron and Ales Hemsky scored the other goals for the Oilers.

Kings 7 Coyotes 3

In Los Angeles, Ziggy Palffy had a goal and three assists to lead the Kings past the Phoenix Coyotes 7-3. Luc Robitaille, Lubomir Visnovsky, Derek Armstrong, Jon Sim and Alexander Frolov with a pair scored the other goals for Los Angeles.

Daymond Langkow, Kyrstofer Kolanos and Radoslav Suchy replied for Phoenix.
