PHILADELPHIA, 15 November 2003 — Olympian Simon Gagne scored 1:47 into overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 win over the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Canucks in NHL play on Thursday.

Gagne also assisted on Eric Desjardins’ goal at 16:11 of the third period that gave the Flyers — who have yet to lose at home this season — a 3-2 edge.

However, Todd Bertuzzi scored for Vancouver with just eight seconds on the clock to force an extra period.

The score was knotted at 1-1 after a period, with the Flyers’ Mark Recchi and the Canucks’ Jason King tallying.

Hurricanes 5 Thrashers 1

In Raleigh, North Carolina, the Hurricanes got a goal from Erik Cole just 24 seconds into a 5-1 drubbing of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Josef Vasicek, Rod Brind’Amour, Ron Francis and Kevyn Adams also scored for Carolina. Patrik Stefan got Atlanta’s lone marker, denying Kevin Weekes a shutout.

Senators 5 Blue Jackets 2

In Ottawa, Marian Hossa scored twice and collected two assists as the Senators rallied to rout the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2, all five Ottawa goals coming on the power play.

Hossa helped out on goals by Wade Redden and Radek Bonk, with Bonk notching two assists as well. Columbus had gone up 2-0 after just eight minutes on goals by Trevor Letowski and David Vyborny.

Islanders 3 Canadiens 1

In Uniondale, N.Y., the Islanders got a goal in each period in a 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Oleg Kvasha, Mark Parrish and Jason Blake scored for New York, which is an impressive 7-2 at home.

Andreas Dackell got Montreal’s lone goal early in the second stanza, costing Garth Snow a shutout.

Devils 3 Panthers 1

In East Rutherford, N.J., the Devils got three of the four second-period goals to dump the Florida Panthers 3-1.

Patrik Elias, Brian Gionta and Jay Pandolfo tallied for the hosts, with Stephen Weiss counting for Florida to deny Martin Brodeur a shutout.

Predators 4 Flames 1

In Nashville, the Calgary Flames had the better of the play, taking 30 of the 52 shots, but the host Predators prevailed 4-1.

David Legwand had a goal and an assist to pace the Predators, with Kimmo Timonen collecting three assists.

Oilers 2 Wild 0

In St. Paul, Minnesota, Alaska-born netminder Ty Conklin, subbing for injured number one Tommy Salo, registered his first NHL shutout as the Edmonton Oilers blanked the Wild 2-0. Conklin turned aside all 22 Minnesota shots. Ethan Moreau scored unassisted just 1:14 into the contest with Mike York finding the mark later in the opening stanza.

Coyotes 3 Avalanche 2 (OT)

In Phoenix, Branko Radivojevic scored 1:51 into overtime to give the Coyotes a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Radivojevic also assisted on Ladislav Nagy’s game-tying goal 12:04 into the final period. Joe Sakic and Rob Blake tallied for Colorado. Rookie Phil Sauve and veteran Sean Burke tended net.

Blues 4 Sharks 3 (OT)

In San Jose, Petr Cajanek scored with 15 seconds left in overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 win over the Sharks. San Jose rallied with three third-period goals, two by Marco Sturm the other by Mike Ricci, to force extra time but were unable to complete the rally with a win.

Kings 4 Maple Leafs 4

In Los Angeles, the Toronto Maple Leafs got third-period goals from Gary Roberts, Alexander Mogilny and Owen Nolan to earn a 4-4 tie with the Kings. Alexander Frolov tallied twice for Los Angeles and also collected an assist.
