CHICAGO, 16 November 2003 — Brendan Shanahan scored on a power play just over a minute into overtime as the Detroit Red Wings edged the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Friday to win the 669th meeting between the teams dating back to 1926.

Kirk Maltby tallied twice more for Detroit, with Brett Hull getting the Red Wings’ other marker.

Igor Radulov scored twice for Chicago, his second goal at 13:06 of the third period making it 3-3. With number one netminder Jocelyn Thibault about to undergo hip surgery, rookie Craig Anderson went the distance in the Blackhawks’ goal.

Lightning 5 Capitals 2

In Washington, Fredrik Modin scored twice as the Tampa Bay Lightning went 4-0 up midway through the second period on their way to a 5-2 rout of the reeling Capitals, snapping an 11-game losing streak in the nation’s capital.

Vincent Lecavalier, Cory Stillman and Martin St. Louis also found the mark for the Lightning, with Jaromir Jagr and Jason Doig answering for Washington. The Caps have just nine points in 17 games.

Bruins 4 Blue Jackets 0

At Columbus, the Boston Bruins did all their scoring in the opening 18 minutes in a 4-0 thumping of the Blue Jackets, who were booed off the ice after the first period.

Glen Murray tallied twice, with Dan McGillis and Brian Rolston getting single goals.

Felix Potvin turned aside all 24 Columbus shots for the shutout, the 30th of his career.

Penguins 2 Sabres 1 (OT)

At Buffalo, the Pittsburgh Penguins won for just the fourth time this season, Aleksey Morozov scoring 3:09 into overtime on an assist from Drake Berehowsky in a 2-1 victory over the Sabres. Berehowsky got Pittsburgh’s other goal midway through the third, with Daniel Briere tallying a period earlier for Buffalo.

Stars 3 Coyotes 3

At Dallas, the Stars and Phoenix Coyotes each scored twice in the third period in a 3-3 deadlock. The Stars got goals from Bill Guerin and Rob DiMaio, with Radoslav Suchy and Jan Hrdina replying for Phoenix, Hrdina’s goal coming in the last minute.

Earlier in the day, Dallas coach Dave Tippett underwent emergency surgery on a disc in his neck, leaving Rick Wilson behind the bench.

Thrashers’ Lessard Suspended One Game

The National Hockey League on Friday suspended Atlanta Thrashers right wing Francis Lessard one game without pay for a spearing incident that occurred in Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Lessard, who received a major penalty and game misconduct for spearing Carolina defenseman Bob Boughner with 2:22 remaining in the third period, will forfeit $2,430.56 of his $450,000 salary.

In seven games this season, Lessard has collected 22 penalty minutes. The former third-round pick of the Hurricanes has two assists and 109 penalty minutes in 30 NHL contests.
