EDMONTON, Canada, 24 November 2003 — Yanic Perreault and Richard Zednik both scored two goals each for the Montreal Canadiens as they edged the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 to win the first outdoor game in the National Hockey League on Saturday.

A sellout crowd of 57,167 at frigid Commonwealth Stadium, the largest crowd in NHL history, witnessed The Heritage Hockey Classic, which also featured an Oldtimers Game that reunited Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and their Edmonton Oilers teammates from the 1980s.

While the temperature at game time was -18 C, it did not dampen the spirits of the crowd or players who participated in the throw-back games that linked pro hockey to its outdoor roots.

The Oiler MegaStars defeated their Montreal counterparts, who featured Hall of Famers Guy Lafleur and Larry Robinson, 2-0 in the first game before Jose Theodore made 34 saves as the Canadiens in the main game. Jarrett Stoll, Steve Staois and Eric Brewer scored the goals for the Oilers.

In Columbus, Fred Brathwaite made 24 saves to lead the Blue Jackets past the New York Islanders 2-1.

Panthers 3 Capitals 2 (OT)

In Washington, Stephen Weiss scored at 1:43 of overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 win over the Capitals.

Flyers 3 Bruins 2

In Philadelphia, Mark Recchi scored the game-winning goal on a power play in the second period as the Flyers stretched their unbeaten streak to nine games with a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins.

Lightning 2 Sabres 1

In St. Petersburg, John Grahame made 25 saves to lead the Tampa Bay Lightening past the Buffalo Sabres 2-1. Pavel Kubina scored both goals for Tampa Bay, which led 2-0 after two periods of play.

Penguins 2 Senators 1 (OT)

In Pittsburgh, rookie Ryan Malone scored at 2:40 of overtime to give the Penguins a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. Tomas Surovy scored the other Penguins goal, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Blues 2 Stars 1

In St. Louis, Pavol Demitra scored the game-winning goal in the third period, lifting the Blues over the Dallas Stars 2-1. Keith Tkachuk scored the other goal for the Blues in his first game back after serving a three-game suspension.

Red Wings 5 Wild 2

In St. Paul, Curtis Joseph made 27 saves in his fourth start of the season as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Minnesota Wild 5-2. Brett Hull, Boyd Devereaux, Nicklas Lidstrom, Kris Draper and Pavel Datsyuk all scored for Detroit.

Flames 2 Blackhawks 1

In Calgary, Dean McAmmond’s goal with 49 seconds remaining gave the Calgary Flames a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Steven Reinprecht scored the other Calgary goal, while Miikka Kiprusoff made 24 saves.

Kings 2 Avalanche 0

In Denver, Cristobal Huet made 21 saves as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-0. Ziggy Palffy and Dustin Brown scored for the Kings, which snapped the Avalanche’s three-game winning streak.

Maple Leafs 5 Canucks 3

In Vancouver, Gary Roberts scored a pair of goals to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
